Summer Reading List by Our Librarian Ellie Schwartz

Happy Summer, Everybody!

Take a look at this very short and subjective list of summer reading for kids and adults. These are books that I have read and enjoyed through the years.

Books for children:

I Love Camp by Todd Parr

(Picture book) Adventures at a Jewish summer camp. I love all of Todd Parr’s books. His bright and colorful books have a Jewish sensibility and an emphasis on diversity.

Try It: How Frieda Caplan Changed the Way We Eat

(Picture book) Summer is a great time for trying new foods. See how Frida Caplan, owner of a product market introduced Americans to new foods like snap peas, seedless watermelon, horned melon, and even dragon fruit!

Good Night, Laila Tov by Laurel Snyder

(picture book) During a family camping trip a brother and sister enjoy exploring nature, and each night they hear the English and Hebrew phrases for good night from the waves, wind, or grass. (From the publisher)

A Zombie Vacation by Lisa Rose Chottiner

(chapter book) A zombie who has stopped being frightening travels the world but finally finds that the Dead Sea is the perfect place to relax. Includes facts about the Dead Sea and Israel. (from the publisher)

These books for children are available from the Jason Schenker Memorial Library at the Ed Center. The library is open through the summer; contact me or Sarit to set up a time for browsing.

A few books for adults:

The Matzah Ball by Jean Meltzer

The Matzah Ball is a rom-com with a twist: the characters are Jewish, and the protagonist has a chronic illness. This book is not only for Passover!

Mr. Perfect on Paper

Some of us have obsessively watched Jewish Matchmaking on Netflix, and are looking for ways to keep busy until Season 2 (hoping that day will come!). Jean Maltzer’s second book, Mr. Perfect on Paper, is another feel-good summer read. Dara Rabinowitz is the founder and CEO of the app J-Date. Her bubbe, who was – and is – a traditional matchmaker tries to work her magic on her beloved granddaughter. Will she succeed? What do you think?

The Matchmaker’s Gift by Lynda Cohen Loigman

Another story about a contemporary woman and her grandmother – both matchmakers! Bubbe had to confront being a woman in an occupation traditionally held by men. Her granddaughter is a divorce lawyer, charged to separate couples, not to keep them together.

Last Summer at the Golden Hotel by Elyssa Friedland

Wondering what to do once The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is over? Try reading this book for another look at life in the Borscht Belt. The two families that own the Golden Hotel in the Catskills have received an offer to sell the hotel, and family members of two generations come together one last summer to decide the disposition of the hotel. This story has conflict, humor, and romance.

Summer is the time for easy, light meals with fresh produce. These are two of my most used cookbooks:

Sababa

Sababa: Fresh, Sunny Flavors From My Israeli Kitchen: A Cookbook by Adeena Sussman

Israeli Soul by Michael Solomonov and Steven Cook

The Levine Library does not have these adult books, but I will purchase individual titles as demand warrants.

The Levine Library in the synagogue is open whenever the building is open. To browse the Schenker Library in the Education Center, contact me (ellie.schwartz1@gmail.com) or Sarit (sarit@tbanashua.org)

Access the Temple Beth Abraham Library Catalog at www.librarycat.org/lib/tbanashua

The catalog contains information about books in both libraries – 1671 titles to date!

Happy reading!
