Conversion

Converting to Judaism

Jews do not seek out converts but we welcome anyone.  If you are curious about becoming Jewish, Rabbi Jon would love to talk with you

Most people explore conversion through a combination of classes in a group and individual conversations with a rabbi. You are welcome to explore with us whether or not you are certain you want to become Jewish, and you do not have to convert in order to be part of our Beth Abraham community.

Preparing to convert to Judaism involves three things:

  • Learning at an adult introductory level about Jewish living, ideas, and history
  • Trying some aspects of Jewish living out for size in your own life
  • Experiencing Jewish community through learning and Shabbat

It’s not necessary to know or read Hebrew to become Jewish. When a person is ready to convert, there is a ritual involving a celebratory conversation with a panel of three rabbis or Jewish scholarly leaders;  immersion in a Jewish ritual pool called a mikveh; and for men a symbolic (or actual) circumcision.

If you’re interested in conversion as a possibility, reach out to Rabbi Jon or feel free to participate in anything in our community. If you’re curious about what you have to learn, here is the “short answer quiz or conversation” that you would aim to mostly be able to talk about at the level of a few bullet points.
